Three vacuum technologies, three different tolerances for contamination, moisture and duty cycle. Matching the pump to the gas is what determines service life.

Vacuum duty is often described only by the required pressure level, but the gas being pumped decides which technology will survive. Two pumps rated for the same vacuum can have completely different service lives on the same process.
Liquid ring pumps
A liquid ring pump uses a rotating ring of service liquid as the piston. Because there is no metal-to-metal contact in the compression space, it tolerates condensate, dust, solvent vapour and corrosive components that would destroy a dry pump. Compression is close to isothermal, so discharge temperatures stay low.
The trade-off is that it needs a service liquid supply and a separator, and it consumes more power than a dry pump at the same duty. For wet, hot or contaminated gas streams, that is usually a fair exchange.
Rotary vane pumps
Rotary vane pumps deliver a steady vacuum from a compact frame, which is why they are built into packaging machines and process skids. They reach deeper vacuum than a liquid ring pump and need no service liquid.
Their limit is contamination tolerance. Vanes, seals and oil are sensitive to dust, condensate and aggressive vapours, so filtration and correct oil selection matter. Where the gas is clean, they are often the most economical choice.
Side channel blowers as vacuum sources
A side channel blower used on its suction port produces rough vacuum at high volume, with no oil and no wear parts in the air path. It cannot reach the deep vacuum of the other two types, but for vacuum lifting, central vacuum systems, holding and conveying duty it is simple, clean and maintenance-light.
Matching the technology to the gas
- Clean, dry gas, compact installation — rotary vane.
- Wet, hot, dusty or corrosive gas — liquid ring.
- High volume rough vacuum, oil-free required — side channel.
- Condensable vapours — liquid ring, or a dry pump with a condenser and filtration upstream.
Send us the gas composition, the required pressure level, the flow rate and whether condensate is expected, and we will confirm which technology fits — including the accessories needed to protect it.
